We normally think that in the winter season, our lawns need less care. However, even during this season, it is necessary to take care of your lawn.
This post is intended to let you know reasons why you should continue your lawn care during the winter season in Texas.
First of all, lawn care during the winter will help prevent weeds from growing, as spring weeds start growing in winter. Winter is the perfect time to do preventive treatments that will nip tough-to-manage broadleaf weeds in the bud.
One of the main benefits of preventing weeds from growing during winter is that in spring, you can focus on planting annuals rather than worrying about weeds.
Irrigation Maintenance/Repair or Installation:
This is the perfect time of the year to take a look at the irrigation system. While you’re getting some of Mother Nature’s help with watering, you can take the time to repair/install or perform maintenance on your irrigation system.
Moisture:
Even though it is a cold season, your soil can get a little dry and lose nutrients. Since the lawn isn’t taking in moisture during winter as it does in other seasons, your soil still needs water.
What to do? Always ensure your soil has a fine layer of moisture added; you can use a hose, if necessary.
Besides keeping your soil moist, regularly watering lawn beds and the ground near your home's foundation will help that soil stay moist to prevent foundation cracking, which is common in certain areas.
Don’t forget to rake your leaves. It may seem like a good idea to keep leaves in your lawn to provide nutrients to your soil. However, dead leaves can be an obstacle that prevents your grass from getting the sun, water and nutrients it needs to be healthy and beautiful.
During winter, we recommend that you keep your grass short so an overnight frost or a freeze won’t cause matted turf, which is more susceptible to damage and disease.
Final thoughts:
We hope that we provided you with good reasons why you should continue your lawn care during the winter season. Even if the winter is not the primary growing season for your lawn, you can take advantage of the low growth season and focus on the appropriate lawn care for your property.
