Step by Step Guide of How to Clean Paver with Pressure Washing

Cleaning pavers with a pressure washer can rejuvenate their appearance and extend their lifespan. At J. Ponce and Son today we’re providing a step-by-step guide on how to do it effectively:

Materials Needed:

Pressure washer (with appropriate nozzle)

Protective gear (goggles, gloves)

Broom or leaf blower

Mild detergent or paver cleaner (optional)

Water source

Sand (for refilling joints, if necessary)

Sealer (optional, for added protection after cleaning)

Steps:

Prepare the Area:

Remove any furniture, plants, or obstacles from the paver area.

Sweep the pavers to remove loose dirt, leaves, and debris. Use a broom or a leaf blower for this task.

Select the Right Nozzle:

Use a fan or rotary nozzle to prevent damage to the pavers. A 25-degree nozzle is commonly recommended for paver cleaning.

Test the Pressure:

Before you begin, test the pressure on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it’s not too strong. Adjust the pressure setting as necessary to avoid damaging the pavers

Wet the Pavers:

Start by wetting the paver surface with water. This helps to loosen dirt and makes cleaning more effective.

Apply Detergent (Optional):

For heavily soiled pavers, apply a mild detergent or paver cleaner. Use a detergent attachment on the pressure washer or manually apply the cleaner. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes to break down the dirt and stains.

Pressure Wash the Pavers:

Hold the pressure washer wand at a consistent distance (typically 12-18 inches) from the surface.

Move the wand in a sweeping motion, working in small sections to ensure even cleaning. Overlapping strokes can help prevent streaks.

Rinse Thoroughly:

After cleaning, rinse the pavers thoroughly with clean water to remove any detergent residue.

Check and Refill Joints:

Inspect the joints between the pavers. If sand has been displaced, refill the joints with polymeric sand or regular paver sand. Sweep the sand into the joints and lightly mist with water to set it.

Allow to Dry.

Let the pavers dry completely before placing furniture or walking on them.

Seal the Pavers (Optional):

For added protection and to enhance the appearance, consider applying a sealer after the pavers are completely dry. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application.

By following these steps, you can effectively clean your pavers using a pressure washer, restoring their original beauty and ensuring they last for years to come.
